WhatsApp News & Update: Popular Messaging App Fails to Encrypt Chats; Experts Say

WhatsApp has been one of the most popular call and messaging apps to this date, but lately, a new revelation about how it fails to encrypt chat messages emerged online. A blog post from zdziarski revealed that the application has failed in deleting chats; leaving what the blog calls as "forensic traces" of the messages.

Apparently, the action to clear, delete or archive chats doesn't mean the messages are gone and they are still retrievable using certain programs and codes. That alone posses a breach in privacy. To test the claims, zdziarski installed the WhatsApp and began a series of threads in it.

After gathering enough data, it claimed deleting, clearing and archiving the messages and made a backup just to see whether the messages are deleted. It turns out, the deleted SQLite records were never removed from the database.

The problem now on the WhatsApp security is not actually the deleted messaging staying on the secured device. The problem arrives once these messages are thrown out in the open and with no control on how to collect them, they usually pose a risk on the person's privacy.

In the most technical way possible, zdziarski suggests deleting the entire WhatsApp application on your device and reinstall it again. This is the only way that a person will be able to totally delete chat histories on phone.

Meanwhile, it's also advisable to do the removal of app occasionally and not just a one time procedure. Fortunately, the WhatsApp team can do something about this, maybe not to retract and fix what's already been there, but to improve the popular messaging apps' security level in the future.
