Riot Games: League of Legends Playoff World Player Fined $30,000

The League of Legends' World Playoffs was not only plagued with technical glitches throughout the championship games, but rife with accusations that some participants cheated.

After investigating the matter, Riot Games found one particular participant, Woong from Azubu Frost, guilty of cheating and benefiting from it.

Riot Games had to postpone the remaining matches. During the playoffs, some of the participants paid no heed to the instructions of "look forward." They were found to be looking at the giant minimap that was overhead of their opponents, which was to show the game to the audience.

Many were caught cheating. A few got stern warnings for unsportsmanship behavior but were let off after it was found they didn't gain a competitive advantage.

After careful review, Woong of Azubu Frost was fined $30,000 because the information obtained by looking at the minimaps helped Azubu Frost to move ahead. Riot found that the team "modified their gameplay based upon the information," Kotaku reported.

Riot said that the rounds will not be replayed, as it did not decide the winner of the game. The game developer will be making sure that there won't be any more cheating issues when the rounds continue.

"We take this stuff seriously. Our rules on sportsmanlike conduct are clearly communicated to competitors, and our decisions here are based on those rules," said Dustin "Redbeard" Beck, vice president of Riot in the company's blog post. "More importantly, this sort of behavior shouldn't have been possible in the first place, and we recognize that and have taken steps to ensure it doesn't happen in the future."

The finals of League of Legends Playoff World will resume on Saturday.
