PlayStation 4 Release Date: Scarce Resources Causing Development Delays?

PlayStation 4, the next-generation gaming console from Sony's stables which was rumored to be in development, may not reach markets as soon as previously speculated.

According to reports, 2014 has become the possible year for release.

Fergal Gara, managing director, PlayStation UK, said that development resources were bit scanty for all the platforms his company was working on, including PlayStation 4.

Earlier reports suggested that Sony was having trouble trying to balance the support of PS3, PS Vita and the upcoming PS 4, iTechPost reported.

"We do have a challenge to manage [the next generation of consoles], particularly in terms of dev studio resources," said Gara, DigitalTrends reported. "The more platforms you have, and the amount of rich content you have to deliver on all the systems you are supporting clearly puts pressure on decisions made across the studio network, which is something we are battling with."

Various reports have suggested that Sony has been working on a new video game console that will ultimately succeed the popular PlayStation 3. Its been given the codename "Orbis," otherwise known as PlayStation 4. It will be a direct competitor to Microsoft's upcoming Xbox 720.

PS 4 is rumored to support 4K resolution. It is also rumored that it will not include any backwards compatibility. Sony's new gaming console may be launched with AMD CPU and AMD graphics power.

"We're going to continue supporting the PS3 for the next few years," John Koller, Sony's vice president of Hardware Marketing said in September.

It will be interesting to see what features Sony includes in its next-generation gaming console.
