PlayStation 3 to Get a New Update, Oct 23; Retires its Folding@home Project

Sony's PlayStation 3 will get new system software update on Tuesday. It will be newer 4.30 version.

This update brings in changes to the Trophy Collection. The update shows the Trophies that the player has earned in their PS3. Both the Trophy level and progress level can be viewed through the update.

Sony said it will be killing off its "Life with PlayStation" application with the new 4.30 version update. This means curtains down on PlayStation's participation with Stanford University's Folding@home a project that was "aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding and studying the causes of a variety of diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's as well as various cancers," said Eric Lempel, VP, Sony Network Entertainment in a blog post.

The project started in 2007 on PS3. More than 100 million computation hours was devoted by PS3 users for the project. Sony said this project contributed greatly to Stanford University's Alzheimer's disease research.

"The PS3 system was a game changer for Folding@home, as it opened the door for new methods and new processors, eventually also leading to the use of GPUs. We have had numerous successes in recent years," said Vijay Pande, Folding@home research lead at Stanford University.

"Specifically, in a paper just published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, we report on tests of predictions from earlier Folding@home simulations, and how these predictions have led to a new strategy to fight Alzheimer's disease," Pande said. "The next steps, now underway at Stanford, are to take this lead compound and help push it towards a viable drug. It's too early to report on our preliminary results there, but I'm very excited that the directions set out in this paper do appear to be bearing fruit in terms of a viable drug (not just a drug candidate)."
