Technology Update: A Sewing Robot To Replace Humans In Clothing Production; Adidas Threatened?

In today's era where technology continues to innovate, people are becoming more dependent to machines for their daily activities. Clothes no longer necessitate working hands to clean them; a washing machine got the busy person's dirty laundry covered. There are also notions that Adidas is not a fan of this technology.

Despite the rumors of Adidas worrying over the new technology, that presumption has just been debunked. Hence, the day when a robot which can sew garments on its own, has come and is completely not a surprise. As what Yahoo! Tech previously reported, a company called Sewbo has already developed a robot capable of sewing clothes.

Moreover, Engadget said that Sewdo's advocacy is to replace humans with an automaton, a moving mechanical device made in imitation of a human being. The sewing robot has the capability to assemble a T-shirt by stiffening the fabric.

This is to make the fabric be more like a piece of cardboard. The sewing robot's arm thereafter picks up the pre-cut pieces using suction and feeds them into a sewing machine. As soon as the making of the shirt is finished, the sewing robot simply drops it into hot water to remove the non-toxic polymer stiffener.

The sewing robot also has its limitations. Sewbo pointed out that the sewing robot cannot handle soft materials like clothes with much dexterity. The idea of developing a sewing robot is not a first from Sewbo. Electroloom, for one, wanted to "3D print" garments.

The idea of Electroloom did not actualize for its downsides. It is hard to see the benefit of automation when people can already buy a T-shirt for $5. More importantly, the materialization of the invention could throw millions of garment industry workers, most of whom are women, out of work.

With Adidas already using robots to build shoes, the automation of clothing production is already somewhere near reality. The modern technology is rapidly taking over the lives of people and while machines make people's work easier and faster, it is very important to note that people should not allow machines to cause a barren human productivity.
