‘Pokémon Go’ Updates: Understanding Pokémon Go Buddy System

"Pokémon Go" is getting an important update called the Buddy System.

"Pokemon Go" is coming up with a buddy system update that will significantly change the way people play the biggest game of the year. In a report by Kotaku, players will now be running around with their favorite Pokemons tailing them around gobbling up candies as they rack up the miles walking and running. While this offers a fun and easier way to gain candy, one big issue people might have is the distance they need to cover.

In the same Kotaku post, the new buddy system is pretty simple - players get to choose which Pokemon they want as buddies and they instantly appear beside their avatars. As soon as they start walking, candies are generated every kilometer and it is the Pokemon buddy's job to pick them up. However, not all Pokemons get the same amount of candies which raises the concern about how much walking players need to do. As an example, Magikarp candy only appears after walking a kilometer and it takes 400 of them to evolve such a Pokemon. This translates to 400 kilometers of hiking just for one Pokemon!

In a post by Forbes, the buddy system is game maker Niantic's answer to players' concern regarding Pokemon evolution. Before the update, hunters needed to catch a lot of monsters in the wild just to evolve their Pokemons. This time around with a buddy in tow, players get rewarded with candies for every kilometer they walk that can be used for upgrading Pokemons.

The post by Forbes also gave some guides and pointers on how to start using this new system of playing for "Pokemon Go." Activation of this function is done via the trainer profile which can be found on the bottom left corner of the screen. There is a "buddy" button in the three bars in the bottom right corner. Tapping it will open a Pokemon list wherein players can choose which one they wish to partner with.
