NPD: Xbox 360 Sold 281,000 Units in January

The Xbox 360 sold 281,000 units in the month of January, Microsoft announced today. The Xbox 360 has been the top-selling piece of gaming hardware for the past 18 months, outsold the PS3 for the past 25 months in the US, and the Nintendo Wii U the console launched last November.

Despite being the newest of three consoles, the Wii U has suffered from comparitively stagnant numbers, selling a mere 55,000 units for the 3rd month in a row. Gamasutra notes that Wii U first quarter sales are 38% lower than the Wii's opening months.

In software, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 continues its dominance over the top spot on the chart according to the NPD. The chart is stacked with holdover hits from the end of 2012, with new releases like DmC only reaching number six on the charts, and PS3-exclusive Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch failing to crack the top ten.
