Why I'm Afraid To Play 'Starcraft II: Heart Of The Swarm'

Blizzard's "Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm" is out and the reviews indicate it's quite good. I won't be getting it. At least, not yet.

It's not because I don't like the RTS genre. Both Relic Entertainment's "Company of Heroes" and "Dawn of War" franchises are two of my favorite games of all time. And while I've already made clear how terrible I am at Valve's "Dota 2" it's still a blast to play.

No, my problem with the game is it's daunting multiplayer scene. I got the game last year during a Black Friday sale. After loading it up, I played the single player for a bit hoping to get up to speed for multiplayer, and then put it down thinking I would get back to it. Several months later, I never got back to it and now the second part of the planned triology is out. Part of my reluctance is the thought of having to suck for a long time at the competitive multiplayer, which many reviews say is the heart of the game, before getting any good. While I'm happy to dump 70 hours into Activision's "Black Ops 2" the thought of doing the same thing in "Starcraft" fills me with dread.

My other problem is the need to know so much what happened in the first game to understand what goes on in the second game. Since I'm nowhere near finishing part one, it's like I'm starting at negative eight or so hour of entertainment. It makes me tired just thinking about it.

What do you think? Is the game worth it?
