Apple Releases iOS 6.1.3 Update: Fixes Lock Screen Bug, Blocks Evasi0n Jailbreak

Apple's iOS 6.1.3 firmware update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch fixes the lock screen vulnerability bug in addition to bringing a ton of Map improvements in Japan. The iOS 6.1.3 update also addresses the flaws used to install the evasi0n jailbreak.

The passcode unlock bug, identified over a month ago, allows attackers to bypass the unlock feature on the lock screen of an iPhone and thereby access a user's private data including iMessages, FaceTime, photos and so on. The iOS 6.1.3 update fixes the bug and Apple's official release note explains the fix for the passcode unlock bug as:

Available for: iPhone 3GS and later, iPod touch (4th generation) and later, iPad 2 and later.

Impact: A person with physical access to the device may be able to bypass the screen lock.

Description: A logic issue existed in the handling of emergency calls from the lock screen. This issue was addressed through improved lock state management.

Another important inclusion in the update patches the exploits that made evasi0n possible. One of the members of evad3rs team, MuscleNerd, confirms through a tweet, "Apple gives hat tip to @evad3rs for 4 of the 6 security fixes in 6.1.3." Apple mentioned one of those exploits in the security briefing as:

Kernel

Available for:  iPhone 3GS and later,

iPod touch (4th generation) and later, iPad 2 and later

Impact:  A local user may be able to determine the address of structures in the kernel

Description:  An information disclosure issue existed in the ARM prefetch abort handler. This issue was addressed by panicking if the prefetch abort handler is not being called from an abort context.

CVE-2013-0978 : evad3rs

The update also brings a host of updates to Maps in Japan. It's no surprise that Apple wants to improve the Japanese version of Maps as it lacks some of the basic navigation features. The update adds turn-by-turn navigation, 3D landmarks and better optimization of directions to favor highways over country lanes to its Maps app for Japan.
