When a developer says a new game takes place in the same world as one from another franchise, the assumption there is that game is a sequel, prequel or some sort of spin-off. Nintendo used Wednesday's Nintendo Direct web cast to say something similar about the new, gorgeous "The Legend of Zelda" game coming to the 3DS later this year. Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime chose his words very carefully.
"We're now developing a new game that will take place in the same game world for Nintendo 3DS," he said, adding that Nintendo wants to "reinvigorate" the top-down 2D world from "A Link to the Past" with the 3D feature of the 3DS. Keep in mind, the new game doesn't have an official title yet.
Even more interesting, a NeoGaf user compiled the images shown during the broadcast to recreate what seems to be one continuous level. He then propped it up next to an image of the original "A Link to the Past" in the image below.
It turns out he meant what he said quite litereally. Fils-Aime did say that while the game-world will be the same, it will feature a new storyline and new dungeons. Also present is a new mechanic that allows Link to become a two-dimensional part of a wall, pictured below, allowing him to solve puzzles in new ways. "A Link to the Past" had no such feature.
A new "Legend of Zelda" is a new "Legend of Zelda." Much like the upcoming "The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker" HD remake for Wii U, no matter what this game is in nature it should excite fans nonetheless.
