2016-17 NBA Latest News: Rookie Kris Dunn Shines in First NBA Start for Wolves

Rookie Kriss Dunn was impressive in his first career NBA start for the Minnesota Timberwolves in their 116-80 thumping of the short-handed Memphis Grizzlies. The fifth pick overall in this year's draft started in place of regular starter Ricky Rubio who is recovering from a sprained right elbow.

Dunn appeared in two games for the Wolves prior to their rematch with the Grizzlies and averaged six points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 17.5 minutes per game. In their rematch against the Grizzlies, he tallied 10 points, four rebounds, six assists, and five steals in 29 minutes.

"I feel I've been getting good minutes," said Dunn. "I've been playing in some tough situations the last two games. And that's the type of games I like to play in. So Ricky, if he doesn't have the chance to play tomorrow night, or any other games, I'll have to step up and be ready."

He wasn't named as the player of the game but his impact on the game was evident. He played tenacious defense every time he stepped on the court ,which resulted in his five steals. He also was able to run the offense for the Wolves and got six assists.

Before Rubio got hurt, there were already speculations that Dunn was going to assume the starting role some time during the season. Wolves Head Coach Tom Thibodeau is known for rewarding players who plays defense with a lot of minutes, just ask Luol Deng. And that's exactly what brings to the table. During the preseason, Dunn scored in different ways but he struggled with his outside shot. Despite having shooting woes, he was consistent with his defense. He was agile, tough, and relentless even though it was just the preseason.

In a survey conducted for the 2016 draft class, Dunn was favored to win the Rookie of the Year award, edging the top two picks, Ben Simmons and Brandon Ingram. He was also selected as the best defender of the class and so far, he has showcased what he can do through three games.

The Wolves did not set a timetable for Rubio's return although he will not require surgery. That means the 6-foot-4 standout from providence Dunn will have more chances at running the point and show more of what he can do on the court.
