'Futurama,' the long running animated space comedy, is getting cancelled. Again.
On Monday, Comedy Central, which airs the show, said it would not order any more episodes. This is not the show's first brush with cancellation. 'Futurama' originally ran on Fox for 72 episodes between 1999 and 2003. Comedy Central acquired syndication rights to the show and eventually ordered new episodes that began running in 2010. Along the way there were four straight-to-DVD movies.
Comedy central says the final season will begin on June 19 and run through the begining of September.
Matt Groening, the man behind 'The Simpsons' and with David X Cohen, 'Futurama,' says in a statement: “I’m very proud of the upcoming season. If this is indeed the end of ‘Futurama,’ it’s a fantastic finish to a good, long run.”
Dave Bernath, executive vice president of program strategy and multiprogramming for Comedy Central, proves why broadcasters usually don't let executives make with the ha-ha in in a statement to The New York Times: “Having the opportunity to bring ‘Futurama’ back for 52 episodes over these last four years has been a thrill for all of us at Comedy Central. The upcoming season promises to be the best final season of ‘Futurama’ yet.”
