Google Fiber Who?: Vermont Offers Gigabit Network For $35 Per Month

Google's efforts to bring super high speed internet speeds to the U.S. are laudable. While only a tiny percentage of American homes are running a gigabit connection, that number is set to grow. We already know about Google's effort to bring high speed interent to Kansas City, Austin and Utah. Now it's Vermont's turn.

However, it's not Google that's bringing the heat to Vermont, but Vtel, a local internet provider. According to The Wall Street Journal, Vtel currently has about 500 customers who pay $35 a month for gigabit speeds and plans to offer the service to all 17,500 of its customers by next year. Vtel is able to offer such low prices due to Federal grants. “Google has really given us more encouragement,” Michel Guite, Vtel's chief executive says explaining that the company was denied Federal funds once before beeing approved once Google Fiber was a thing.

With those kinds of speeds multiplayer games like Call of Duty become a different experience. Here's hoping more telcos jump on the trend. So far, according to GigaOm, the number of people who have these kind of connections is tiny.
