Ouya Release Pushed to June 25th, Gets Additional $15 Million in Funding

Hope you're feeling patient. The retail release for the hackable Ouya Android console has been pushed from its original release date of June 4th to June 25th.

Speaking with Joystiq, Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman said the new date was the result of greater demand from retailers. "In order to meet their greater than expected demand, we decided to shift the launch date by a couple of weeks - three weeks - which will allow us to create more units and, basically, have more units on store shelves in June," Uhrman says.

The console also found itself with a fresh injection of cash totaling $15 million. Add in the total gathered from the console's Kickstarter campaign gives the Ouya $23 million to play with.

The money came in from a number of investor groups and firms specializing in mobile and tech projects: Mayfield Fund, Nvidia, Occam Partners, and Shasta Ventures. No, not the drink.

There's also a new member to the Ouya board, former EA CCO William "Bing" Gordon, who used his partnership with Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers to invest in the Ouya. Gordon worked at EA for over 20 years, and currently serves on the board at Zynga.

The Ouya began shipping to Kickstarter backers at the end of March. Early reviews were weak, but most said the console had promise. When the Ouya launches, there should be well over 100 games available, including the re-tooled Final Fantasy III.
