'Scandal' Season 6 Air Date, Spoilers, News & Update: Will Mellie Grant Lose The Presidency? Tragic & Bloody Storyline Revealed? More Details

After much ado, "Scandal" Season 6 finally announced a return date next year to complete the "Thank God It's Thursday" lineup on ABC. And the political thriller series has never been more relevant now, as the current electoral realities of the United States certainly mimic those of the political thriller series. Fans will feel the similarities even more so as the sixth season will pick up straight on the election night between Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) and Frank Vargas (Ricardo Chavira). Can viewers handle the double stress of watching yet another Election Night 2016?

And it looks like there's double cause for concern, as the new "Scandal" Season 6 trailer revealed that Mellie no longer feels comfortable about the whole elections cycle--or worse, preempting that she's losing the White House. Is she backing out of the race?

What we know so far about 'Scandal' Season 6

It's been previously reported that "Scandal" Season 6 will kick off on elections night. Showrunner Shonda Rhimes explained that this is because they did not want to spend the entire season meandering about the whole election cycle. She and the rest of the cast and crew also once noted that they wanted "Scandal" Season 6 to mirror that of the current electoral cycle involving Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump.

Mellie to lose the presidency

By all counts, Mellie Grant is certainly equivalent to the Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton. Both are strong, brilliant stateswomen, with experience and knowledge to boot, as they gun for the first female president of the United States. This has been acknowledged by most of the cast and crew of "Scandal" Season 6. But with Clinton's stunning White House loss, will Mellie Grant follow the same route?

In the trailer, Mellie is seen yelling at Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) that she is "done running for president." An angry Liv yells back that she's not. But is this a sign that Mellie is losing the White House too? Stay tuned for more "Scandal" Season 6 updates, which will return on Jan. 19, 2017.
