Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Multiplayer Free Steam, Double XP Weekend Begins

Fans of the Call of Duty franchise that have yet to upgrade to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 are being given a free chance to experience the game that has everyone scrambling for kills, as Treyarch and Valve/Steam have partnered to offer the game's multiplayer gameplay modes to Steam users for free this weekend.

The free PC multiplayer weekend is going on now, and will last until Sunday, May 12 at 1PM Pacific (or 4PM Eastern in the US). While that bonus is great for gamers that don't already own the title, as it gives them a taste of what to expect, those players that have already invested in the game are also being given a bonus.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 developer Treyarch has announced that a full Double XP weekend will launch today, May 10, across all major platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Nintendo Wii U. This news comes by way of the company's official Twitter account, where the company has also announced that this Double XP event will last even past the weekend proper, officially shutting down on Monday morning (May 13) at 10AM Pacific (1PM Eastern).

This Double XP event is accessible by both current game owners and those trying the title for the first time via the free Steam weekend.

Sweetening the deal even more, Black Ops 2 is currently on sale on Steam for 33% off, or around $40. To access the free weekend, players must login via the Steam app and download the multiplayer version of the game via the "Featured Items" section of the Steam homepage.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 takes players to the year 2025 as US Special Forces operatives are thrown into a new Cold War between the US and NATO, while terrorist Raul Menendez causes chaos for both sides and deepens the conflict. The game's multiplayer and Zombies DLC modes have helped Black Ops 2 become the second most successful game of Q1 2013, according to Activision.
