The Witcher 2 Developer Embraces Mods, Releases Free REDKit Development Tools

With months still separating gamers from the launch of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, developer CD Projekt RED has released something exciting to keep players in the Witcher mood. The Witcher creator has released REDKit, a full package of modding tools that can be used to craft "non-linear role-playing adventures."

The REDKit is available to download for free on the official Witcher website. While not identical, the package is based on the development tools that CD Projekt RED used to create the second game in the franchise: The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. Whether gamers wish to create something entirely new in the game, or just add to something already available, the REDKit will allow modders of any skill level to toy around with what makes the Witcher series literally tick.

"For CD Projekt RED, RPGs are all about telling amazing stories," says Adam Badowski, head of CD Projekt RED, in a release. "We want to give players the power to tell the same kind of non-linear, branching stories that made The Witcher games so popular. Our fans have helped us for years to make our games the best they can be, and REDkit is part of embracing our community as a partner in game development."

REDKit gives players terrain tools for manipulating in-game foliage, access to a dynamic day and night cycle and control over dialogue cameras, giving each modder the ability to create a film-like experience during their own crafted conversations (either with or without voice acting). All of this, of course, comes packed with the visuals and locations found in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

Those interested in seeing what the REDKit tool package can produce can check out the game's first featured mod, Lykaon. The mod, while in alpha, contains hours of new gameplay for players, lots of enemies to kill, quests to complete and a storyline that changes based on the decisions players make throughout, resulting in one of two storyline endings when the mod is complete.
