Among the flagship smartphones, it is the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 that is notorious for its exploding battery. However, an Australian woman found that her plugged-in iPhone 7 could be dangerous too.
Gizmodo, which published a photo of Melanie Tan Pelaez’s burnt arm, reported that she slept with the Apple device on her arm while it was charging. When she woke up, there were second-degree burns on Pelaez’s arm. She went to a hospital for treatment and was told that a foreign object “fried” her arm which Pelaez said turned out later to be her iPhone 7.
Doctors reached that conclusion after they matched the markings on her arms to the iPhone 7 and the charger, News.com.au reported. However, when she brought the gadget to the Apple Store to report the incident, the Cupertino-based tech giant said “it couldn’t have been the phone because it didn’t have a distinct smell,” Pelaez said.
Testing the Phone in California
Nevertheless, Apple took her device and provided details of the incident. She later received a call from a member of the executive team who told her the iPhone 7 is on its way to California for testing.
The burn markers left a scar on the pregnant ownr of the iPhone 7. Pelaez met with a cosmetic surgeon about her choices on how to deal with the scar. In a post on Facebook, the disappointed phone owner wrote that she has been an iPhone user ever since, and it is the first time she had an issue with her handheld unit.
“So it’s really scary and disappointing that something like this happened and can happen to someone else,” Palaez wrote. Apple offered her a new iPhone 7, but she turned it down because she now distrusts the phone.
The iPhone 6 Too
A report in August said an iPhone 6 which burst in a man’s pocket caused also second-degree burns on the gadget owner. The incident happened amid reports that Apple is planning to buy a $50-million retail store in Melbourne’s Federation Square. The outlet would serve as Apple’s flagship store in Australia. Digital Trends reported that it would the current building in the Square and construct a new one made of an all-glass façade which is the classic look of Apple edifices.
