Mojang's popular sandbox video game "Minecraft" will soon have a movie adaptation under Warner Bros. Studios. Casting activities are ongoing with actor and comedian Steve Carell being eyed for a role in the upcoming film.

"Minecraft the Movie" showrunners and Carell have entered negotiations for the actor to join the Warner Bros.' film, according to Variety. The Hollywood movie studio acquired the rights to create a movie version of Mojang's popular game in February. With "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" director Rob McElhenney identified to helm the upcoming "Minecraft" film, showrunners have tapped "Wonder Woman" scribe Jason Fuchs to write the movie.

Carell was last seen in the movie "Café Society" with co-stars Jason Eisenberg and "Twilight" actress Kristen Stewart. Recently, the actor completed filming activities for "Battle of the Sexes," a Fox Searchlight production. Portraying the character Bobby Riggs, Carell was joined by Emma Stone who played the character Billie Jean King.

Meanwhile, it is still unclear if Carell will decide to join Warner Bros.' "Minecraft the Movie." Details about the actor's potential role have yet to be disclosed. However, casting speculations point to Carell playing the game protagonist Steve.

In "Minecraft," Steve is the name of one of the character skins available in Mojang's video game. Players have the option to change characters from Steve, Alex and other characters, or create their own player skins.

In other news, Mojang recently deployed its patch 1.11, also known as the "Minecraft" Exploration update. Game developers have added llamas, a Shulker box and a Cartographer, a new villager type, who can give away special maps in exchange for emeralds, Game Rant reported.

The new "Minecraft" maps will provide gamers with the location to several hidden treasures. Other details included in the map are directions to the Woodland Mansion or the Ocean Monument. Each in-game location contains various challenges, as well as building materials and rewards.

The "Minecraft" exploration update was deployed on Nov. 16, while "Minecraft the Movie" is expected for release in May 2019. Learn more about the latest game patch in the clip below:
