Call of Duty: Ghosts will not support user generated content - Infinity Ward taking a cue from EA?

Infinity Ward’s upcoming shooter title Call of Duty: Ghosts is set to arrive later down the year and already it’s moving head on with its next biggest rival EA and DICE’s Battlefield 4 in attempt to get a better piece of the market in the upcoming months. However, it seems like this time both Infinity Ward and EA are one the same page with their respective titles.

In a recent interview with AusGamers, Mark Reuben, Infinity Ward expert and current producer for Call of Duty: Ghosts, revealed that the company’s upcoming first person shooter won’t allow any kind of user-generated content. What this means is that players can forget about any modding tools or level editors for the game.

When asked if the game will allow players to create their own content, similar to Far Cry’s level editors for the game’s console version, Reuben stated: “It’s absolutely something we’d love to do, the problem lies obviously in security and also it’s a competitive game, and so if you give people too much access to those toys they can ruin other people’s experiences. The unfortunate part of this is there’s almost nothing I’ve seen out there that is people who have hacked the system who are doing good...”

On the prospects of at least a level editor for the game that will alleviate the desire to “break the game,” Reuben (who had a mild laugh) said that he didn’t agree with that because he believes that the community “would still try and break the game because they’re not trying to break levels, they’re trying to break people’s progression, or they’re trying to break things with, like, aimbots and all that kind of stuff.”

This decision from Infinity Ward is also in tune with what DICE mentioned about its game a few days ago. As reported, DICE general manager, Karl-Magnus Troedsson confirmed that DICE will not release any SDK or similar modding tools for its upcoming shooter.

And the reason for this, according to Troedsson, is due to the fact that DICE needs to make sure that it has the right tools available for the game, alongside the correct security for the parts of engine it would decide to let loose for the game.

Additionally, on asked about all the new stuff that will be offered via the game (like Riley the dog, a new storyline and a new engine) alongside the others that have been ported over from the previous games in the franchise, and about its impact on the fans, Reuben stated: “Yeah, a little bit. Actually, let me rephrase that: we don’t worry about it, what it is is what you’re seeing is early in the game where we do a little handholding until you [progress]. We still do give a lot of audio feedback and in actuality it’s just to stay more ‘real’ than bringing up hint text, like, we don’t do a big block of hint text that would stop the game and say ‘You’ve Now Got This Ability, You Can Now Do This and This and This’ which a lot of games actually do and we try to make it feel more natural.”

“But you know, the goading thing... part of it, honestly, comes from focus testing -- so we bring people in once a week to play the game and we only let them play that one scene and so what we do is, a lot of the time the level starts off without a lot of that goading, and when we have people play through it and there’s a point where they sort of get lost or feel like they don’t know what they’re supposed to do next, we say “okay, that’s a no” and we need to make sure there’s some kind of...,”he added.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is arriving on Nov. 5 for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, Wii U and PC.
