Sony has Tekken Revolution on the PlayStation 3, Microsoft is putting a rebooted Killer Instinct on the Xbox One, and now Nintendo will have a free to play game of its very own as well.
The game in question is an all new version of Steel Diver, a submarine simulating, shooter with strategy elements that served as a launch title for the 3DS. Infamous Nintendo exec revealed the plans for such during E3 last week, and is planning a nice face life for the game, complete with a brand new design.
"There is something we're doing with the Steel Diver idea that I think is going to open things up with that game," he said. "It's going to be very fun. We're exploring from a perspective of where we can take that from a multiplayer standpoint - it's going to have this four-player battle mode that I think is going to be very interesting."
No other details on how the free to play model will work, through subscriptions or with microtransactions, but the game itself should be available "relatively soon."
No platforms as of yet were announced for the game's release, but there will be a retail version of the game available along side its digital launch. A launch on the Wii U is expected, because as Nintendo President Satory Iwata once noted, that while the company wasn't interested in developing free-to-play games, the Wii U supported the concept.
The choice to go with Steel Diver as a free-to-play title was certainly an odd one. While the game nobly attempted to show off the handheld's 3D capabilities, the game itself was critically panned by most reviewers. Coupled with the poor reviews and the fact that it's now two years old, Steel Diver remains mostly forgotten by audiences.
It currently maintains an averaged score of 58 at Metacritic.
