Sell outs, backer delays affect Ouya's launch

Ouya has gone from insanely successful Kickstarter to being available publicly at selected retailers Tuesday. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo may have to watch out.

The small Android console can now be purchased for $99 at U.S. stores including Best Buy, GameStop, Target and the hardware maker's website.

According to a tweet from Ouya, the console is currently sold out in the United States and United Kingdom at Amazon.

Every Ouya console comes with the system, a wireless controller with removable faceplates, an HDMI cable, two AA batteries and a power adapter.

According to the Ouya site, there are 176 games for the console and all are available to try through a free demo. Third party developers for the console include Sega, Double Fine and Square Enix.

While many gamers are enjoying their Ouya some backers of the original $8.6 million Kickstarter campaign could have to wait another two weeks before receiving the microconsole according to Kotaku

In a backers only message from Ouya founder Julie Uhrman, she seemed angered by the issue.

"I am pissed," founder Julie Uhrman wrote, "Some of you have not yet received your Ouya, and to you, I apologize."

Uhrman also said that Ouya's customer service team has tripled as a way to properly address backers' concerns.

Reports say that many of the console delays comes from international backers according to a message Kotaku received from Ouya's head of operations Ken Stephens.

Part of the reason for the delay according to the report lie from a third party distribution partner in Hong Kong.

Only a day into its release, the Ouya console's sudden popularity stems not only from the Kickstarter but its own controversial unofficial E3 showing.

The hardware maker held a tent across from E3's home in the Los Angeles Convention Center that was open to the public. This lead the Electronic Software Association to allegedly send truck as a way to block the tent's visibility and intimidate the hardware maker through law enforcement.
