Avatar 2 News And Update: Fox Reveals Release Date of James Cameron's Long-Awaited Sequel

Fox quietly released several release dates of movies in the pipeline last night, including Avatar 2 which is set to be released on December 21, 2018. Technically, it's an untitled movie from James Cameron's production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, but all other clues indicate it's the long-awaited sequel. The last time Cameron gave an update regarding the movie's release, he indicated December 2018 as the planned schedule as per Deadline.

When the sequel was first announced, the original release date was set on December 2014. The film did not materialize back then as James Cameron explained that in the middle of writing the scripts, the sequel extended not just into two, but into three more movies as per Deadline. If everything goes to plan, there will be four new Avatar movies in total.

But the sequel didn't materialize in 2015. The movie was delayed into 2016, then 2017. But when Disney announced that Star Wars: Episode VIII would be released in December 2017, Avatar 2 was pulled out of the calendar with no new date as to when it will be released as per CinemaBlend. Until now, that is. Based on Fox's new schedule, the movie is set to be released in 2018, with sequels to be released at 2020, 2022 and 2023, per Deadline.

Cameron has also given snippets of what the sequel would be like. The sequel will be set several years after the events of the original Avatar, and will mostly focus on the children of Sully and Neytiri, as per Digitalspy. Assuming that Avatar 2 finally gets released in 2018, James Cameron and the cast will be quite busy filming the rest of the sequels until the last movie is released.
