Apple Latest News & Update: Tech Giant Stores Users Call History To iCloud; Is This Invasion Of Privacy?

A software company, Elcomsoft has discovered that iPhone syncs call history without any option to disable it. It claims that this sync process may be useful to some, but most of the Apple users don't want it.

Apple has been syncing user's data from their iPhone to iCloud storage since the cloud-based storage was introduced. The sync process includes photos, videos, files, messages, contacts and even the call history. Apparently, some may find it not good if there is no option for this syncing process to stop, especially with the call history.

Elcomsoft, a software company based in Russia, has found a way to retrieve the call history of an iPhone user via the iCloud. Apple saves user's call history up to four months if iPhone owners use iCloud. Elcomsoft pointed out that any phone breaker or hackers can easily access call log information that was uploaded to iCloud, MacWorld reported.

According to iMore, call history that was saved to iCloud includes phone numbers, dates, time-stamped of calls made, received and the duration of calls. However, Apple answered that syncing the call history is never a secret. "We offer call history syncing as a convenience to our customers so that they can return calls from any of their devices," Apple spokesperson said.

Apple added that customer's data is secure with an encryption that only users can access using their passcode. In contrast, Elcomsoft said that customer's data is not secured as long as the attackers have the right tools.

To emphasize, the FBI was able to unlock the iPhone of the San Bernardino shooter with the help of a third party contractor. This was done after Apple refused to decrypt the user's data for the ongoing investigation on grounds that it could pose a security risk for all users. This incident only proves that user's data is not secured and can easily be hacked.

Meanwhile, Apple is not only the vulnerable company for hackers since other brands have its own cloud-based storage. While syncing user's data to cloud storage is convenient if you will use another device or will do a reset, be also aware that the information you upload can impose a threat for your privacy.
