MMA News: Conor McGregor’s Coach Calls UFC’s Decision to Strip Featherweight Title ‘Ridiculous,’ ‘Shortsighted’

Conor McGregor made UFC history at UFC 205 by holding two titles in different weight divisions simultaneously. His reign as the double champ lasted all of two weeks, as the UFC announced that the Irish supernova would “relinquish” his featherweight title. And while Conor McGregor has yet to comment on the UFC’s decision, his coach John Kavanagh expressed his distaste for the development.

“They lost a main event and then they haphazardly threw together a new main event. They felt they had to make this for a title in order for it to sell, so they brought in another interim title that Jose Aldo already has and then bumped Jose Aldo up to the current undisputed champion which just seems ridiculous to me,” Kavanagh told Red FM breakfast show.
Kavanagh went on to point out that it had only been 11 months since Conor McGregor won the featherweight strap by knocking out Aldo in just 13 seconds, while saying that there have been many examples of other fighters waiting 15 and 18 months before defending their titles. “He’s 11 months and they stripped him of it. I thought it was very shortsighted by the UFC how they went about it doing it,” Kavanagh added.

The UFC made the decision following the groin injury that forced light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier to pull out of his rematch with Anthony Johnson at UFC 206. The UFC then made the bout between Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis an interim featherweight title fight – a decision that promoted then interim champion Aldo to the full title holder.
