Splinter Cell: Blacklist's plot summed up in under a minute [Trailer]

Black rubber suit? Check. Bag full of techy toys n' tricks? Check. Complete adherence to stealth? Check. Gravelly voice? Again, check. Watching a masked man threaten the country, his suit standing at the ready, Sam says aloud to no one in particular, "To protect the lives of millions, I will become what they fear most." Sound familiar? I guess like criminals, terrorists are a cowardly, superstitious lot. Sam Fisher is officially Batman in this new trailer summing up Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

Ubisoft broke out all the CGI stops for a new spot that you'll be seeing on the boob tube soon enough, provided you haven't seen it already. It's a lot more action heavy than you'd expect from the Splinter Cell series, but advertising is all about sexy-ing up a product, and stealth is a hard sell when your basic TV watcher has the same attention span as the amount of time alotted in this latest commercial. I can only imagine what that means for those of you who still bother to peruse random web sites for their video game news. Are you still reading this?

In reality, Ubisoft is promising that Blacklist is taking a bit of a step away from the last entry in the series, the action-laden Conviction, and has a higher emphasis on stealth. Players are actually rewarded for sticking to the shadows, and will have to do some Hitman styled hiding of bodies. Describing the game to Eurogamer, Ubisoft Montreal Managing Director Jade Raymond explained, "Splinter Cell still really is a thinking game. It's really about being intelligent and taking that time in the first phase to plan out how you're going to do things, and understanding the elements, and even planning your gadgets and your load-out and being smart about it. That's where you get the thrill, but it's a different way of playing than most games on the market these days."

If anything, the action of the video could be indicative of Blacklist incorporating that changing aspect, Sam's new "killing in motion" feature, which allows him to target a group of enemies and execute them in one swift motion.

You can check out the brief trailer with Sam closing things out with his usual Spider-Man routine below. Game's out next week, August 20th, for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
