CONSOLES

A close look at the Xbox One controller and its features

There have been countless comparisons made regarding the features present on the new Xbox One’s controller and the ones on its nearest competitor, PlayStation 4’s DualShock 4. While we bump into more and more details almost every day, we've yet to handle the controller ourselves and check out the differences. Thankfully, there are number of hands-on details about the controller which makes it possible for us to discuss the Xbox One controller in details.

Not long ago, Microsoft revealed a detailed video about the controller for the new Microsoft-based console where Xbox's Major Nelson discussed the controller and its features with general manager Zulfi Alam.

According to what the designer showed us in the video related to the controller, the new model of the controller has over 40 different concrete updates compared to that of the Xbox 360.

Alam was especially particular in mentioning the new modification made to the battery pack of the device. The new controller, with its sleek and smooth design, is expected to be more optimal for gameplay purposes, in comparison to the previous controller for the Xbox 360, which was a bit bulky with the battery pack for the device protruding out of the controller. Microsoft has put in numerous hours of game testing while deciding between hundreds of models before finally coming up with the controller that it tags as the best controller ever made by Microsoft.

One thing that stands out about the controller is the amount of attention paid to vibration and haptic feedback. The upcoming controller model has been designed in a special way for players to expect perhaps the most lifelike, sensitive vibration and feedback ever available in a controller. There will be different vibrations present to compensate for different in-game situations, different vehicles, and different guns. While the intensity of these vibrations are said to vary with different situations, the variations will also be present from the left to the right side of the console that can determine a vehicle’s directions or your opponent’s aim.

Basically, Microsoft is aiming to deliver a more dynamic and realistic gaming experience by making use of the built-in haptic features of the new controller.

Another new feature of the controller for the upcoming Xbox One is the built-in sensitive LED lights that are said to work in accordance with the system’s revamped Kinect camera. The Kinect will now recognize the number of potential players present in the room and will keep changing their respective gamer profiles whenever the controller changes hands all across the room. This way, it gets easy for both the system and players to keep a check on their own personal scores and gamer profiles, and get registered accordingly.

The Xbox One is set for a November 2013 release. Check out the video below for more details.
