Pre-order Grand Theft Auto 5 on Xbox 360, get 1,600 Microsoft points

They say the early bird gets the worm, but Microsoft seems to think that latecomers should be rewarded. Probably explains why they haven't given an official release date for the Xbox One yet. But that's neither here nor there. At this rate, a great deal of gamers have already no doubt pre-ordered what's sure to be Rockstar's next hit, the upcoming open world Grand Theft Auto V, all so they won't be left waiting on line come launch day (September 17).

The Redmond giant announced today that Xbox 360 owners who pre-order the game through its own Microsoft Store will get a voucher good for 1,600 Microsoft Points, or, approximately $20 now that the company has done away with the point system. It's likely the result of a plan the company already had in mind to bolster sales before deciding to scrap the point system.

Microsoft made fans aware of the news on the service's page for the game, so if you haven't put in a pre-order yet, this seems like a pretty good reason to do so. Once you do, you'll be sent an e-mail with a voucher code within ten days of the game's launch. Just keep in mind that it's only valid until a day before the game is set to arrive. Now, if you've pre-ordered at a retailer like Target, Best Buy, or GameStop for example, sorry, but you're S.O.L.

Microsoft announced at this year's E3 it would be scrapping points, likely as a means of simplifying things for the next-gen Xbox One. Most gamers were met with the change via an update to 360 consoles yesterday. A post detailed the update, reading, "As part of the recent Xbox 360 system update. Microsoft Points are being retired, and transactions on Xbox 360 are taking place using your local currency instead of Microsoft Points, offering you a new, convenient way to purchase exciting Xbox content. This change allows you to use a single Microsoft account to purchase content from your Xbox 360, and apps from the Windows Phone Store for users with a Windows Phone 8!"

GTA V centers around three characters performing a number of heists, each with their own reason for doing so. Players have the ability to switch back and forth between each character on the fly (when not taking part in a mission). First up, you have Michael, who seems to act as a sort of leader of the trio. He's a career criminal whose patience for his family and his wallet are both running dry. Next up, the story is set for repo man Franklin who wants out of the life he's dug himself into. Finally, the resident redneck Trevor, definitely the most colorful of the bunch, but also potentially the most dangerous

Rockstar has confirmed there will be multiple endings, and the story will be about the same length as Red Dead Redemption, at about 25 - 30 hours, and that's before the massive amount of secondary things to do, or release of the obligatory DLC, so this should be a monster of a game.
