Rockstar honors infamous San Andreas myth in Grand Theft Auto 5

Urban legends are a funny thing, especially with regards to video games. Despite developers' insistence that certain ones just aren't true, the rumors persist. Older gamers may remember the nude raider code that would see Tomb Raider heroine run around with a lot less than a pair of booty shorts and a tank top. Whispered in arcades and message boards in the infancy of the internet, most brushed rumors like this aside, but they still stood strong. Enough so that sometimes, developers would later honor some of the more infamous urban legends in later renditions of certain game series as a nifty easter egg.

We've seen this with the cow level in Diablo II for example, or Shen Long as a playable character in Street Fighter II, long before Capcom made him an official part of the game many years later.

An example of a recent myth was that one of cryptozoology's most infamous apes was alive and well, shambling around somewhere in the woods of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, a rumor which left players wandering around the forest for hours on end, trying in vain desperation to set eyes on the sasquatch. Like many other rumors, no one's quite sure where it got started, but Rockstar was humored enough by it that the company decided to put the furry primate into Grand Theft Auto V.

A Redditor has stumbled upon the furball and shared his findings with the rest of the internet.

So far, it looks like Bigfoot only appears during Trevor's "Predator" mission, which sees trio put some competition of their meth-addled socio out of business. During the hunt, players get a helicopter that's been fitted with a thermal scope. Look at the right place at the right time, and you'll catch a brief eyeful of the sasquatch, but be quick about it, because he disappears into thin air at a moment's notice. On the ground hunts for 'em have yet turned up no results.

Multiple videos have popped up on YouTube of showing the beast, so it doesn't look like this is a mere rumor. A few viewers have dubbed the hairy ape as nothing more than an odd looking, run of the mill NPC in the wrong place at the wrong time. Decide for yourself by watching the video below. And yes, spoilers lie ahead:

Now that one mythical beast is out of the way, hop in a submarine and see if you can find the Alamo Sea monster in the lake's murky depths.
