'A United Kingdom' News & Updates: New Trailer Up On Film About Interracial Marriage & Its Effect On A Nation

new trailer for Fox Searchlight's "A United Kingdom" has just been released. The new trailer focuses on the difficulties that lead characters played by David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike had to face in light of their forbidden relationship.

Oyewolo is best known for his role as another real-life character Martin Luther King Jr. in "Selma".  Pike is most recognized for being the main character in David Fincher's "Gone Girl". "A United Kingdom" is set in British-occupied Beuchuanaland (now Botswana) in 1948.

Oyelowo plays  Seretse Khama, the crown prince of Beuchuanaland who meets and falls in love with office worker Ruth Williams in London. The relationship as indicated by the times, was forbidden, not only by the families of both parties, but jeopardizes Khama's status as the crown prince of his African homeland nation as that interracial marriage was illegal.

In the new trailer for "A United Kingdom," Rosamund Pike's character Williams is told by her sister, "Father will hate him on sight - he's cleverer than him, and he's black."  The trailer suggests the resilience of the couple despite overwhelming odds of them being torn apart.

"We need him more than you - let him go," Says one African character to Pike's character. David Oyelowo's Khama addresses the issues head on when he says, "I am told you no longer honor my duty as your king because of the color of the wife I have chosen." He then persists at the end of the preview in a seemingly emotional address to the citizens of his nation: "I am ready to serve you because I love my people. I love this land, but I love my wife."

"A United Kingdom" is directed by Amma Asante (Belle) based on a screenplay by Guy Hibbert (Eye in the Sky) which is adapted from the novel The Colour Bar by Susan Williams. The film previously won The film is set for release on Feb. 17, 2017. Watch the new trailer for "A United Kingdom" below:
