A "Train to Busan" English remake is finally going to happen. Recent reports revealed filming for the remake will take place in Los Angeles.
According to Variety, French company Gaumont has picked up the rights to the "Train to Busan" English remake. The English language version of the hit South Korean movie will be set in America. Filming on the said remake will take place in Los Angeles.
This decision was made after the zombie flick gained international recognition. "Train to Busan" became a worldwide hit, after it opened in limited theaters in the US, UK and other non-Korean speaking countries in the South East Asia, including the Philippines.
Likewise, the movie caught the attention of French filmmakers and studios during the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. The film was among the South Korean entries. This is probably why a French film company decided to invest on the "Train to Busan" English remake.
However, the main purpose of the English language version is supposedly to make it easily available to other countries, especially the US. The "Train to Busan" English remake aims to bring the story to more English speaking viewers.
Next Entertainment World (NEW), the film's Korean distributor-financier, finalized the deal with Gaumont on Wednesday. The CEO of NEW, Kim Woo-taek, has since issued a statement to confirm the production of the "Train to Busan" English remake.
"We are more than happy to start our business with Gaumont, one of the greatest film companies with rich experience in terms of global projects. We hope this opportunity could let Korean films get more attention and be familiar with the audience all over the world," Kim Woo-taek said as quoted by Variety.
Further details about the said remake remain scarce. Gaumont succeeded in securing the rights to the "Train to Busan" English remake, against other Hollywood studios including Fox and Sony.
