"La La Land' Opening News and Updates: Rave Reviews Help Set Indie Box Office Record

Things are looking up for Damian Chazelle's "La La Land", a modern take on a musical starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. The "Whiplash" director has come up with another music-heavy film, this time a love story.

Aside from rave reviews , "La La Land" has brought in an estimated $855,000 after only having been released in five theaters. The five theater release had yielded an average of $171,000 per screen according to The Wrap. This makes "La La Land" the second highest per-screen average earning indie film next to "The Grand Budapest Hotel."

The film also boasts a 96 percent average in Rotten Tomatoes. This sets them up for a very good box office return come the wide release date as well as possible awards season accolades.

"La La Land" is the story of Mia, an aspiring actress (Emma Stone) and Sebastian, a passionate jazz musician (Ryan Gosling), weighed down by rejection, they meet and fall in love in a story set in modern-day Los Angeles. This original musical deals with the struggles of a couple trying to strike a balance between nurturing their relationship and pursuing their dreams as well as going through daily life in a city known for both making dreams come true and dashing them to pieces.

The film is and directed by Damian Chazelle who's previous work was the Academy Award-winning "Whiplash" about a young jazz musician trying to prove himself to a draconian music teacher. Chazelle has proven to have a flair for incorporating music into his filmmaking as evidenced by the critical reception of "La La Land."  Chazelle has also written "10 Cloverfield Lane" and "The Last Exorcism Part II." The musical is set for worldwide release on Dec 16. Here is the trailer for "La La Land":
