PS Plus offers Borderlands 2 free for PS3 owners via Instant Game Collection

Playstation Plus offers Borderlands 2 today for the low price of nothing

Playstation Plus continues to prove what an excellent deal it is for anyone with a Playstation system with the release of Borderlands 2 into its Instant Game Collection. When the Playstation Store updates later today, subscribers to the service will be able to download the title for absolutely free, putting it onto their systems with last week's release of GRID 2.

The list of free games currently available right now to PS3 owners if you sign up is staggering. Instant Game Collection is no misnomer- just look at the multitude of great titles like XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Uncharted 3, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and Binary Domain, not to mention some fantastic smaller titles like Star Wars Pinball and Telltale's Poker Night 2. Later this month subscribers will be able to download the psychedelic Dyad for free, while Vita owners will get Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed and Urban Trial Freestyle.  If you own a Vita or a PS4 there's plenty of freebies already available for there as well, and each week new games are added, along with deeper discounts for games already on sale.

Case in point - this week PS Plus subscribers can pick up critical darling Spelunky for a mere $3.75, down from $14,99 That game is cross-buy as well, allowing you to continue your game on the road via your Vita (something I plan doing!) Other games for sale include Dragon's Crown for $26.99, the complete Tomb Raider Bundle for $13.49, and the first two Marvel Vs. Capcom games for $3.75 a pop.

Check the Playstation Blog for the full list of discounts, as well as a handy picture that shows all the currently available games for the Instant Game Collection. $50 a year for Playstation Plus immediately gets you a pretty solid collection, and while the PS3 doesn't require the service to go online (PS4 does) it's worth it regardless.

Meanwhile, Xbox Live Gold started its own free game service called Games With Gold, which offers two games a month. Its free title right now? Gears of War. That's right, the first one, the one every Xbox owner already has that came out in 2006. Sony is absolutely killing it in this regard.
