Put the legos away PlayStation gamers. Come tomorrow, you never have to worry about your bare tootsies stepping on a rogue lego piece while trying to bring your imagination to reality ever again. After years of being a console exclusive for Microsoft's Xbox 360, Minecraft makes its PS3 debut stateside tomorrow.
If you need an explanation on what the game is at this point, and why its PlayStation 3 release is a great thing for damn near all involved, then I can't imagine why or how you wound up reading up on the matter here. Suffice it to say, Minecraft is the quintessential and literal sandbox game, complete with its own convention, is constantly updated, and boasts the type of sales numbers that would make Scrooge McDuck drool, leading to one bad ass office.
Unfortunately, there's been no mention on when exactly Minecraft will arrive outside of North America, but it should be around the same time, if not later this week. The game is also set to release on the PlayStation 4 and Vita, but similarly, there's been no mention of when that's expected to happen.
As for what fans could expect from the PS3 version, Mojang's Owen Hill took the time over at the PS Blog and responded to a few fan questions he had received.
He stated that there would be no major differences between the versions, and that the "PS3 Edition comes with everything present in other console versions. They're pretty much identical to play, and will be developed in tandem from now on."
"Downloadable skins and texture packs will be available from PSN soon after release," and there's also the possibility of PlayStation-specific skins and texture packs. Compatability between the PS3, PS4, and Vita editions is unknown, but expect more information on that when the team details the PS4 version. I'd expect cross-play between Vita and PS4 versions, but don't hold your breath on PS3 gamers being able to play with their next-gen pals.
And as for Minecraft's mythical miner, Herobrine will "probably not" feature in the PS3 version.
