Nintendo Announces NES Remix: Play as Link and Mario in Remixed 8-bit Classics on Wii U [TRAILER]

NES Remix Announced- Challenge Yourself With Remixed Versions of 8-bit Classics

Today Nintendo held another of their famous NIntendo Direct event where Satoru Iwata, Global President of Nintendo, gets to chat in his adorable-yet-broken English about what new tricks Nintendo has on the way. It's  usually where Nintendo announces their upcoming games  and today was a doozy. The biggest and best surprise might have been NES Remix,  a brand new game for the Wii U that's comprised of old school NES titles.

At first look the game looks exactly like they took a bunch of 8-bit games and rereleased them but you'll soon see that the game is broken up into bite-sized challenges, some of which place characters in different games or even modifiy the game in drastic ways.

Ever want to try and stomp a koopa shell 100 times in a row? How about fighting Donkey Kong with Link? How tricky would it be to play through the original Super Mario Bros. if it started scrolling from right to left, or the platforms disappeared on you? NES Remix gives you all kinds of tiny challenges like this, somewhat llke one of those WarioWare games but even more retro. It looks like it has the same breakneck pace as that party game, that's for sure.

It looks great and the most ridiculous thing about the announcement was the reveal of the release date- RIGHT NOW. That's right, you can turn on your Wii U and download the game immediately, no wait required, unless your internet is trash.

While this may not be the kind of game that will convince people that a Wii U is worth it if they're not fans of Nintendo's stable of characters, it's a refreshing take on those old classics. Here's the official word from NIntendo:

"Select parts from 16 classic NES games have been remixed with new challenges. For example, players might be tasked with completing a familiar Super Mario Bros. stage while running to the left. Or they might encounter a revamped level of Donkey Kong that allows them to play as Link from The Legend of Zelda series. NES Remix includes Miiverse compatibility, so players with broadband Internet access can show off their skills, complete with cool 8-bit stamps."

NES Remix is now available in the Nintendo eShop for Wii U for $14.99. Check the official site for more screens, videos and 8-bit goodness.
