Late last month, shortly after the Xbox One was released worldwide, there were reports circulating that Xbox One consoles were actually smoking.
Despite that reports were minimal, it caught a lot of attention. Given that it was exceedingly frequent, most looked at the event with raised eyebrows. Skeptically speaking, anyone could easily write in complaining about any range of problems. The lack of visual evidence led to the belief that the complaint was nothing more than a hoax. Now, some video has finally come to light.
Youtuber ButtBuddy recently posted a collection of videos showing the console actually smoking. That, and himself apparently peeing into a toilet, but that's besides the point. It's not the most dramatic, but you can see smoke rising from the console. The YouTuber noted a smell of burning plastic, but the issue seemed to resolve itself over time. Check out the videos below:
SpawnFirst was the first to report on the video, and reached out to "ButtBuddy," who described the event thusly:
"The console wasn't in for more than 6 hours, 2 hours away on netflix and the rest watching TV, the console turned off, I tried to turn it back on but it didn't. I started smelling a electronic burning smell, I switched outlets and it still remained off, I unplugged and plugged it back in after each try, then I started seeing smoke, it lasted for about one minute, and left it alone while I slept, I woke up and the console still won't stay on. Xbox said I can mail it to them with the fastest time I would have to be billed for the console temporarily until the console is received, or I could just rake it to gamestop for a replacement."
A few contributing souls on YouTube chalk the problem up to the console laying on the carpet. To this, "ButtBuddy" has replied he only had the console on the carpet to document the smoke and only had it there for approximately 5 to 10 minutes, and make sure the outlet wasn't the issue.
When the reports first started, Microsoft issued a statement on the matter, a representative saying, "The situation described is not something we're seeing. If customers are experiencing any issues, they should contact Xbox Support at https://support.xbox.com...To clarify: that's correct; it's not something that the support team is seeing."
"ButtBuddy" did describe his story on the Xbox Support forums. A search for "smoking" on Xbox One's Support site yields no results.
