The Vita Outsells the Wii U In the UK in 2013

Ouch- Vita Outsells Wii U in 2013

Ouch. We all knew how badly the PS Vita has been selling, right? It's an amazing little system that for my money can't be beat for portable gaming, but it has not caught on at all. But according to new figures published by Eurogamer today it's still managed to outsell the Wii U in the UK. This is with Vita sales down substantially from 2012, as well! Ouch, ouch, ouch.

Here's the full list of best-selling consoles in the UK from numbers company Chart-Track. This is consoles sold in the UK in 2013, as well as the change in sales from last year.

  1. 3DS (including 2DS, XL) - up 4 per cent
  2. Xbox 360 - down 30.7 per cent
  3. PS4
  4. PS3 - down 31 per cent
  5. Xbox One
  6. Vita - down 41 per cent
  7. Wii U - up 41.5 per cent
  8. Wii - down 72 per cent

While the Wii U was the only home console to show improved sales this year, don't foget that it's because it launched in November of 2012 and this compares its year-long sales to that short period. Even with Vita sales down 41 percent this year the Wii U couldn't move more units. It's more than a bit embarassing at this point.

One interesting note is that sales of the original 3DS dropped by 69.9 percent, but this was more than helped by sales of the new 3DS XL model and the 2DS. That little system is the only thing keeping Nintendo afloat at this point, it seems. Of course, terrific games like Pokemon X/Y and the new Legend of Zelda don't hurt things one bit.

The PS4 and Xbox One accounted for a third of all hardware bought last year, pretty impressive considering they only launched in November. We have further proof of the Playstation 4's dominance of next-gen, at least for now.  The Xbox One couldn't even sell more units than the PS3, although of course the Xbox 360 still continues to be the top seller.

Overall the launch of the PS4 and Xbox One was good news for hardware sales, which got a five percent bump from 2012.
