Call of Cthulhu Game Announced for Next-Gen Consoles

Focus Home Interactive just announced (via a tweet) that Sherlock Holmes developer Frogwares is working on a Call of Cthulhu title. They did this with the unveiling of production art for the game, which is headed to Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

As you can see the art is appropriately bright and chipper, showing puppies and rainbows and all the manner of happy locations you'd expect in an H.P. Lovecraft tale.

The life of that party, that Howard Philips was. Just a ray of sunshine in people's lives.

Of course, this isn't the first Lovecraft game ever made, or even the first time there's been an attempt at Lovecraft's seminal "Call of Cthulhu" novella. Headfirst Productions created the underrated Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth way back in 2005 for the original Xbox (it hit PC a year later), a creepy, pitch-perfect take on the subject matter. Of course, the story actually didn't follow Lovecraft's "Call of Cthulhu" that much at all, instead choosing to focus on "The Shadow over Innsmouth" and its fishy denizens. While that was the first of a planned trilogy sales didn't encourage it but Headfirst never found a new publisher and went into bankruptcy soon after.

Perhaps this could be the title we asked for. Frogwares has dipped their toe into the Cthulhu mythos before, most recently with Magrunner, which combined the mythos with a futuristic feel and with Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened. In both of those titles Cthulhu plays a major role, so they're clearly fans of the subjet matter and likely have a good idea of what to do for the adaptation. Before this however is yet another Sherlock Holmes title called Crimes & Punishments, which will hit the second quarter of this year.

There's no word on what kind of game Call of Cthulhu will be- a puzzler like the Sherlock Holmes titles or something more action-based? But they've definitely already got the tone down and we'll be sure to let you know when we do.
