Flappy Bird Flies Again on Nintendo's 3DS

Flappy Bird Flops to the 3DS...Kind of

Flappy Bird may have been taken off of Google Play and The App Store mobile marketplaces by creator Dong Nguyen, but the feathered fowl is far from pushing up daisies. The game was an enormous hit on smartphones and tablets, but gamers who preferred to do their gaming on other portable platforms like Sony's PS Vita or Nintendo's 3DS missed out on the whole shebang. 'Til now.

Take a pass on the Flappy clones like Fly Birdie - Flappy Bird Flyer and Fluffy vs. Flappy Birds that try to shove microtransactions down your throat, because a fan with a creative flair known as Bluerobin2 has recreated the experience using the DSiWare app Petit Computer. If you haven't heard of this nifty piece of programming, Tiny Cartridge described it as "like WarioWare D.I.Y. with a few key differences."

Gamers can re-live the game's hair pulling frustration on their 3DS in Flappy Bird - PTC Edition.

It's hard to improve on such a simple game, but a small number of alterations have made the absurdly difficult game a smidge easier, thanks to a a landscape view that offers a better view of incoming pipes, and the choice to use buttons to keep the bird afloat instead of just smashing your thumb into the touch screen. Future changes in consideration by Bluerobin include a custom mode, checkpoints, and moving pipes.

Flappy Bird caught fire this month as THE flavor of the week, capturing gamers' attention seemingly out of nowhere. Thanks to the in-game advertising, it was reported to be making as much as $50,000 a day. But as quickly as the game became popular, Nguyen was just as quick to take it down, claiming that the game was an anchor on his conscience, and that fans were overplaying it. Nguyen explained, "Flappy Bird was designed to play in a few minutes when you are relaxed. But it happened to become an addictive product. I think it has become a problem. To solve that problem, it's best to take down Flappy Bird. It's gone forever."

As Nguyen has said he has no intention of taking action against any clone games that have popped up in Flappy Bird's absence, expect the PTC Edition to be around for a while yet.
