Project Spark Microtransaction Plans Changed Following Backlash

Project Spark is one of the more unique games to hit the Xbox One, allowing users to create worlds and characters before letting loose within them. Also available on Windows 8.1 devices, the game brought with it some bad feelings regarding microtransactions. Microsoft originally offered payment options for faster experience and credit gain that players didn't like, but has since changed their plans in response to criticism.

Before the changes, you were able to buy extra Spark Time in addition to the amount you received daily. This accelerated the rate at which you earn XP and credits, and let you try out tools and other features you hadn't yet paid for.

Fans of the game did not feel positively about this structure, and thought it heavily rewarded those who paid more and ruined the experimental, rewarding nature of the game. In response to the backlash, Microsoft will now allow players to buy Tokens with real money, which can be spent on items you don't want to wait to unlock, and players now have free access to all content.

The payment feature of Spark Power has been tweaked as well and renamed "Spark Premium." Rather than simply adding more time to your daily amount to increase XP growth, it gives specific bonuses to earning XP and credits. You can also use it to purchase extra upload slots to add to the three you're given by default for free.

Project Spark is currently in open beta on PC, Windows 8.1 devices, and Xbox One following a closed beta period. You can sign up on their website here.
