Shin Megami Tensei V has reached the 1 Million sales mark, according to an announcement by gaming company Atlus on Twitter.

Shin Megami Tensei V proved to be successful on the Nintendo Switch. Since it was released last November 2021, SMTV has become one of the best-reviewed video games of the year. It was even nominated as the best role-playing game at The Game Awards 2021. During its first week, it sold 143,247 copies.

'Shin Megami Tensei' is the Best Selling Title of the 'Megami Tensei' Franchise

On Sunday, Atlus revealed on their Twitter account that Shin Megami Tensei V has just reached one million copies sold worldwide. While there was no breakdown of the sales per region, this is still an impressive feat for any game.

The Megami Tensei franchise was originally launched in 1987 for the Famicom (the Japanese name for the Nintendo Entertainment System). It has since spawned a number of sequels and spin-offs, including the Persona games, which gained an equally huge following.

The Shin Megami Tensei series is the best-selling series of the Megami Tensei franchise. The previous iteration of the game, Shin Megami Tensei IV, was released for the Nintendo 3DS. It has sold 600, 000 copies. It was also praised by critics, with GameSpot making note of the tension of actions in the game. They said,  "Every action in SMTV has a weight to it, and that's what makes the game so fun and engaging."

Shin Megami Tensei V tells the story of a nameless young protagonist who, while heading home after school, finds himself hurled into a post-apocalyptic world. In this world, humanity is caught in the war between angels and demons. In order to survive, the protagonist must merge with a being called Aogami. Together they become the Nahobino, a powerful creature neither human nor demon.

The majority of the game takes place in the Netherworld - an alternate reality that closely resembles a post-apocalyptic Tokyo.

Nintendo Switch Platform Instrumental in 'SMTV's' Sales Boost

Since the launch of the Nintendo Switch, several franchises have enjoyed a revival in sales, with some even performing better than on previous platforms. Switch exclusives Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Luigi's Mansion have had better sales than other incarnations of the games. Shin Megami Tensei V is just one of these titles that have endured the test of time and are still being enjoyed by both old and new fans.

Shin Megami Tensei is an RPG game series with a standalone storyline per iteration, similar to Final Fantasy. All titles, however, share similar themes and gameplay. The games put emphasis on complex turn-based battles. Players also negotiate with demons, where you bring them items and if they are satisfied they can become your companion.

The games have gained a strong following over the years and are quite popular among RPG fans. The move to Switch has been well received by long-time fans.

Atlus has recently released the Shin Megami Tensei V original soundtrack on Spotify. The album contains the scores, sounds, and songs of the JRPG. There is also a physical soundtrack available featuring 117 songs in 5 CDs.
