A Teacher Is Using 20 Xbox Series S Consoles To Teach Literature

An English teacher in the United States gained a bit of attention after showing the kind of hardware he's using to teach his students literature.

As reported by GameRant, the aforementioned teacher working working at a public school in Oregon used grant money to buy a total of 20 Xbox Series S consoles, each of them loaded with Xbox Game Pass subscriptions.

The teacher also managed to secure a handful of Nintendo Switches and a PS5 with the grant money, which was given by the school board after they were convinced that video games can help teach literary concepts - while also keeping students engaged for far longer.

In a post on the Xbox Game Pass subreddit, the teacher who goes by the handle AnonymousCerealBowl shared an image of the console haul - which looks pretty impressive in its own right:

According to AnonymousCerealBowl, getting the 20 Xbox Series S consoles, four Nintendo Switches, and PS5 was a challenge because he had to convince the school board that they matter (a board which we could only assume is full of non-gamers). In his argument to get the grant, he said that the best games are on Game Pass, and the stories of those games can be analyzed to help the students learn necessary skills that they need for their senior-level English classes.

Aside from playing the games, Anonymous' class will also analyze some scholarly gaming articles as supplemental information. In response, commenters on the post were lauding the teacher, saying he's actually making learning a fun and engaging thing to do.

One commenter went as far as suggest that the teacher contact Microsoft directly, saying that it might give the class (and the school in general) even more benefits. Perhaps it could come as a special monthly rate for Game Pass subscriptions, and the tech giant could also see this as a really cool concept.

Gaming In Education

Gone are the days when so many people would just consider games as a hobby - not something you do to learn. That's due to the efforts of educators like AnonymousCerealBowl, which developers themselves are already taking into account when it comes to making their games.

Ubisoft is one of the developers/publishers, who has reiterated their interest in pursuing education via video games. Among their most recent efforts is using games such as the upcoming pirate title Skull & Bones, as well as their multiplayer title Riders Republic to teach people about climate change. Their efforts are backed by the Playing For The Planet initiative, a UN-sponsored campaign whose goal is to use video games to "inspire young people to act in support of the environment."

The same company has also made their Assassin's Creed Discovery Tour modes available for schools to use. The Discovery Tour modes present in Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla are also being used to develop an actual curriculum with Canada's McGill University, so the modes will be used to their fullest educational potential.
