Xbox Series X Sales Remain Strong Two Years In; Series S Also Impresses

Xbox Series X Sales Numbers Maintain Blistering Pace Alongside Series S

Roughly two years into its life cycle, Xbox Series X sales are still pretty impressive alongside those of its little brother, the Xbox Series S. This is according to claims released by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

The refurbished Xbox Series X consoles are still available at Microsoft Store.

Nadella says that the Series X and the Series S remain as the fastest-selling Xbox consoles in history, with Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X sales eclipsing anything else that Microsoft has ever sold, reports IGN. While he didn't give exact figures, his exact words were that the company has "sold more consoles life-to-date than any previous generation" combined.

We don't need exact sales figures to know that that is a LOT of consoles. That's because it already includes units of the original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Also consider the fact that there were three console revisions each for the 360 and the Xbox One (360 S, 360 E, One X, and One S).

But that's not where Nadella's good news (for investors, at least) stop. He goes on to say that Xbox has remained the market leader in the current-gen console war for three straight financial quarters now. This means they've outsold the PS5 for a considerable chunk of the generation, even if it seems that people want the Sony console more than Microsoft's.

This is more or less in line with the tech giant's excellent Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X sales performance in a market they've historically always struggled in - Japan. In a report by GameRant, Xbox Series consoles outsold the homegrown PS5 in Japan for a week starting in June 13th. And by the following month, Team Green's consoles once again hit a major sales milestone.

As reported by Video Games Chronicle, the current-gen Series consoles have now sold more than double the Xbox One's lifetime sales in Japan. Granted, the Xbox One didn't sell much there, but this is still a far better performance than even Microsoft themselves were expecting. Sales numbers have already surpassed 260,000 units as of July 3rd, while the Xbox One only sold just over 114,000 units.

Looks like after the disastrous launch of the Xbox One, Microsoft finally learned their lesson that TV is not the future *cough*.

Why Is Xbox 'Winning?'

One might assume that Nadella is just "embellishing" Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X sales accomplishments, but that would be a little foolish. As Microsoft CEO, he doesn't have a lot of room to lie about this. And there are a lot of good things happening for the brand right now that no one can deny, except perhaps the staunchest PlayStation fans.

The new Microsoft Xbox One S console is announced during the Microsoft Xbox news conference at the E3 Gaming Conference on June 13, 2016 in Los Angeles, California. The One S is slated to launch in August.

Perhaps the biggest ace in the hole for Xbox in the current console wars is Game Pass, the universally called "Netflix Of Video Games." So many folks are fans of the subscription service, that Inverse even goes as far as to say it has "made the console wars obsolete." Much of this is based on the perceived value that the service gives its players for a monthly fee.

Game Pass subscribers on Xbox consoles and PC have access to first-party games on day one of release - something that Sony and PlayStation aren't offering with their competing PlayStation Plus subscription. And that, according to TechRadar, is where Microsoft makes up for its bottomline. The company doesn't seem to be so reliant on just shifting hardware to make profit - it historically has never made profit on hardware ever (via PCMag) so they're focusing on attracting as many Game Pass subscribers as possible.

Sony's got some major catching up to do.
