Recent speculation about a potential acquisition of the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) intellectual property (IP) by Tencent has been debunked by Wizards of the Coast, the operator of D&D. Contrary to recent reports, Wizards of the Coast has clarified that they are not entertaining any offers to sell the D&D IP.

No Sale of D&D IP
Responding to rumors, a spokesperson for Wizards of the Coast confirmed that discussions with Tencent are ongoing, given their partnership on various projects. However, the company emphasized, "We are not looking to sell our D&D IP." The statement further addressed the ongoing talks with partners, emphasizing the focus on delivering exceptional digital experiences to D&D fans.
The company refrained from commenting on any speculative mergers and acquisition (M&A) or licensing deal rumors.
Larian Studios and D&D
Reports had circulated that Larian Studios, the developer behind the successful Baldur's Gate III, and in which Tencent holds a 30% stake, was considering acquiring the D&D franchise. Larian Studios' founder, Swen Vincke, dismissed these rumors on social media, asserting that D&D is not up for sale.
Amid a slowdown for parent company Hasbro and changes to D&D's Open Game License, the tabletop giant remains resilient. Despite challenges, new D&D games are in development, with Starbreeze, developer of Payday, working on an official D&D multiplayer game.
