Wizards of the Coast to Release Version 5.2 of D&D Rules Under Creative Commons License

The Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) community is abuzz with anticipation as Wizards of the Coast gears up to release version 5.2 of the iconic game's rules under a Creative Commons license. This move comes after a tumultuous period sparked by concerns over potential restrictions on the use of D&D rules in third-party supplements and derivative games.

What to Expect from the Update

Following last year's uproar, Wizards of the Coast reassured fans by committing to making the base rules accessible under a Creative Commons license. In January, they delivered on this promise with the release of version 5.1 of the Systems Reference Document (SRD).

However, with revised editions of the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual slated for release, questions lingered regarding future updates.

Now, Wizards has announced that version 5.2 of the SRD will debut shortly after the revised Monster Manual hits the shelves. Described as a "massive update," SRD 5.2 promises to provide creators with the tools necessary to craft content using the revised and expanded ruleset. Notably, while the update will not include lore references, it is expected to introduce a slew of new rules additions to enhance gameplay.

Hopes and Expectations

Despite the excitement surrounding the forthcoming update, some in the community remain cautiously optimistic. Past iterations of the SRD, such as version 5.1, have been criticized for their limited content. For instance, version 5.1 featured only one feat and one subclass per class, leaving some players feeling underwhelmed.

As a result, games like Solasta: Crown of the Magister have had to innovate by inventing new feats and subclasses to enrich the gameplay experience. With version 5.2 on the horizon, players are hopeful that Wizards will address these concerns and provide a more comprehensive selection of rules and options for players to enjoy.
