Sony's recent State of Play surprised fans with major "God of War" announcements. No one saw these games coming. TC Carson, the iconic voice of Kratos in the original PS2 and PS3 games, revealed that the first three "God of War" titles, collectively known as the Greek trilogy, are being remade.
Santa Monica Studio is leading the project, which is still in early development. While release dates remain unconfirmed, this remake promises updated graphics, refined gameplay, and modernized mechanics that honor the franchise's roots.
'God of War: Sons of Sparta,' A 2D Action Platformer
Apart from the trilogy, the second announcement introduced "God of War: Sons of Sparta," a 2D action platformer focusing on Kratos' youth and his training as a Spartan warrior alongside his brother, Deimos.
Developed by Mega Cat Studios with a story by Santa Monica Studio, the game lets players wield Kratos' classic spear, use his shield for parries and defenses, and equip divine artifacts called Gifts of Olympus. Players can also enhance their spear and accessories called Gouri to unlock offensive, defensive, and exploration boosts.
Gameplay Innovations and Customization
Unlike the mainline "God of War" games, "Sons of Sparta" removes the Blades of Chaos and Leviathan Axe, instead offering a fully customizable spear system. Players can change spear tips for elemental effects, grips for combo finishers, and tails for special attacks.
Shields can be upgraded to improve parrying and reduce damage, while divine artifacts deliver unique attacks. This combination of combat depth and exploration rewards fans with an engaging retro-style yet modernized experience.
