'Shadowgate' Remake TRAILER & RELEASE DATE: Gameplay To Have '4K-Capable Resolutions' & New Puzzles [Video]
It's nearly 30 years after the game premiered on the Macintosh, but the classic point and click adventure game is back. After a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012, Shadowgate is nearly ready for PC, Mac, iOS and Android and we have the first look at the reimagined game with this new trailer.
The creators of the game are back as well, Zojoi's industry vets Karl Roelofs and Dave Marsh. The game was an instant classic, one of the most popular of the MacVenture series and was ported to GameBoy color and even the Nintendo 64. The place most people know it from, however, was the original NES. It was like nothing else at the time, a dark, brutally difficult game that didn't hold your hand and offered a whole new type of challenge to players.
"Dave and I are incredibly thrilled to be returning to Castle Shadowgate after all these years," said Karl Roelofs, design director at Zojoi. "When we created the MacVenture series, we knew we had something special on our hands - the initial response from gamers around the world was overwhelming! Shadowgate has remained near and dear to not only our hearts but to those who remember the haunting original, greatly evidenced by the support our Kickstarter campaign generated. The past few years we have been hard at work re-building and updating theShadowgate experience and cannot wait to inspire, challenge, and terrify an entire new generation of players."
The game is promising 4K-capable resolutions, all of the original puzzles and quests but also plenty of new ones, including new objects to interact with. It certainly looks nothing like the original did- they have completely abandonded the UI this time and utilized hand-painted art. It's so different that it's a lot for fans of the original to take, certainly, but the game's style is in place. Just listen to that updated soundtrack!
Shadowgate is coming to PC, Mac, iOS and Android tablets late summer. It will retail for $19.99 but if you pre-order the PC or Mac versions you can get a copy for only $14.99. They are also offering two collector's edtion packs. There's the "Adventurer Pack" that gives you the full game plus wallpapers and a digital Shadowgate calendar, and the "Hero Pack", which includes all of that plus a complete digital soundtrack, digital art book, beta tester access with in-game credits, and access to the game one week before launch. Those will run you $24.99 and $299.99, respectively, and you get an additional five bucks off for each for pre-ordering.
