'Super Smash Bros 4' 3DS Gameplay: Handheld's Bottom Screen Function Revealed, Shows Damage & Highlights Characters [SCREENS]

Super Smash Bros Pic of the Day Reveals 3DS Bottom Screen During Gameplay, Shows Character Damage

The last major Super Smash Bros. character reveal came in the form of a Nintendo Direct video, which showed off several new playable characters that would be joining the roster. We learned about newcomer Greninja, the water type from Pokemon X and Y, along with a few others.

The daily picture posts on the game's official website haven't been revealing as many details--at least not at once--as the Direct video did, but you can certainly rely on their consistency.

Today's image might not focus on a specific character, but rather how players will be able to identify others and themselves in the 3DS version of the game. Series director Masahiro Sakurai has given us the first look at the handheld's bottom screen during the game, which displays the character name and damage, as shown in the picture above.

Similiar Super Smash Bros. 3DS Feature Outlines Your Character In A Color During Team Battle

Here's his description accompanying the photo, which he continues in the comments with another image:

"Pic of the day. Here's a first look at the bottom-screen display for the Nintendo 3DS. Your name will appear in the area above the accumulated damage. And if you tap one of the fighter displays...!

"...You can highlight that fighter on your screen. This is useful when you want to get back at a particular opponent. You can also highlight yourself if you need to keep better track of where you are. This is a great benefit to having your own individual screen."

This is sure to be a 3DS-only feature, and seems to be implemented because they're concerned about losing track of characters on a smaller screen size (like the team battle color outline feaure). Keep checking back for more Super Smash Bros. news ahead of E3, which will hopefully include an early specific release date announcement or character reveal.
