Wii U Batman: Arkham City's Unique Gameplay vs. Poor Graphics

Nintendo fans are rejoicing to see Rocksteady's award winning title Batman: Arkham City coming to the Wii U console.

Wii U's version of the game titled Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition, will have players take control of the Dark Knight as he battles countless villains from the Batman universe. Gamers have begun making comparisons of the Wii U's visual quality to the PS3 and Xbox 360 after leaked screenshots hit the internet.

Rumors have speculated that Nintendo's next-gen console "Wii U" will have underwhelming visual-processing capabilities compared to competitors PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720.  At best it will be slightly better than the PS3 or Xbox 360.

From viewing the latest screenshots, some of the speculations may be true.  The screenshot pits the PS3 version of Batman: Arkham City side by side with the Wii U version.  While the Wii U Joker appear to retain most of the details from the PS3, the Wii U version of Batman seems to have lost texture and color amidst its highly reflective bat armor.

Nintendo clearly states that their primary concerns for the Wii U console is not visual power, but the playing experience. Wii U may be taking that approach, as Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition will include unique gameplay utilizing its tablet controller.  Batman's real time location and level maps are quickly accessaible, even during action combat. The tablet's inventory screens will make selecting gadgets quick by dragging and dropping, and explosive devices can also be planted and detonated with a single touch.

The tablet will enable fluid and continuous controls, matching the game's cinematic cut-scenes intertwined with gameplay storytelling.  Players will feel immersed into the game with the tablet's real time experience. The Wii U version of Arkham City brings additional features, such as a new BAT suit that absorbs energy through combat. It also comes included with the latest DLC "Harley Quinn's Revenge."

As more games push for powerful graphics and interactivity, Nintendo will look to balance the trend with innovative gameplay.  Visual graphics were not as impressive as its competitors when the Wii console was released, but Nintendo remained atop thanks to the innovative controllers. Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition may be an example of how Nintendo responds to the wave of next-gen consoles.
