Ouya's Kickstarter Campaign Closes, Makes Over $8 Million

When the kickstarter for the Ouya began, it had a goal of raising $950,000, which is pretty high compared to other kickstarter campaigns. It reached that goal, and went beyond it by $50,000 before the first 24 hours were over. "We've been blown away the whole time," says Ouya's CEO Julie Uhrman. Apparently, there's a huge market for "Android-based-open-source" gaming.

"People are ready for something new, and Ouya is that thing," Uhrman claimed. "We never expected to do this well and be this well-received," Uhrman added. "It's just truly amazing that it's resonated so well with gamers and developers."

Since we first heard about Ouya, it's gotten a whole mess of new features and support, with one of its launch titles being promised by Square Enix, as well as support from other companies like Namco. There's also a number of apps like iHeartRadio, as well as others, on the way.

Showing support to her online benefactors, Uhrman said it's the Kickstarter backers who'll be the first in line to get their Ouya consoles. After that, Ouya will begin accepting online pre-orders for consoles, which should ship at some point in April 2013. Ouya backers can expect their consoles to arrive at some point in March 2013, and Ouya promises we'll hear more before then.

The final amount that's been raised? A total of 63,277 backers have raised a whopping $8,580,682.
